Formal self-introduction letter

 Subject: Formal self-introduction letter

Dear Professor Somrita,

I am Tammie Cheang, a year 1 Civil Engineering student from your Effective Communication class. Back in Secondary School, I always excelled in my mathematics and had interests in engineering which was why I decided to pursue a diploma in Civil Engineering with Singapore Polytechnic. Upon receiving my diploma, I decided to continue pursuing a degree in the same field offered by Singapore Institute of Technology.

As an aspiring Civil Engineer, it is interesting to learn about the amount of material required to prevent a building from collapsing, how to weather buildings from external factors like heat, rain, wind, weight and also the amount of metal and concrete needed for different parts of the buildings to withstand additional weight. Gaining all of this knowledge further affirms my part to play in the future that would be beneficial for the communities. The skill set that I would possess from my degree will enable me to better understand, design and develop building structures that are safe and sturdy.

One of my strengths in communicating is that I enter every conversation with a flexible and open mind. I believe that every individual is shaped differently and boasts our own uniqueness, beliefs and values. As a team player, I do my best in participating in group projects by sharing my thoughts and ideas and taking time to listen to my members’ ideas. I am also very receptive to what others have to say about my work. However, a trauma from my poor public performance in the past has greatly affected my confidence in addressing larger crowds which made public speaking extremely dreadful for me. During presentations, I find myself incapable of organizing my thoughts, I break out in cold sweat, I start stuttering and fidgeting which greatly affects my performance.

Communication is an invaluable skill to have, no matter which field we are in. We often have to communicate effectively with diverse people, explaining complex technical ideas in a clear way. Hence, I am really looking forward to improving my communication skills in both the verbal and written form through this module.

I believe that with a positive attitude, and an open mind to learn,  I will definitely achieve better results. Therefore, I look forward to attending your class and gaining more insights on effective communication.

Best Regards,

Tammie Cheang

  3. Dear Tammie,

Thanks for writing this letter. I enjoyed reading your letter. There are few issues to consider regarding language use. Below are my suggestions:

    1. Rephrase:
